The Belém Tower of Lisbon
If you’re planning on visiting Lisbon, no trip would be complete without visit to the world famous Belem Tower. The most photographed Lisbon attraction, this was purpose built in 1515 as a fortress to protect Lisbon’s harbour. Now listed as a World Heritage Monument by UNESCO, the Belem Tower is decorated with ornate sculptures – in particular a statue of Our Lady of Safe Homecoming, there to symbolise the wish that all sailors would be safe and protected on their voyages.
Jeronimos Monastery
Another World Heritage Monument in Lisbon city is the Jeronimos Monastery. Built in 1502 by King Manuel, this beautiful building is the final resting place of Vasco da Gama – a Portuguese explorer famous for sailing the first ships directly from Portugal to India. Built in a Gothic style, there are many architectural aspects to admire including magnificent cloisters and decorative tiling.

Because it is quite compact, most of Lisbon city is easily accessible by public transport and the sights and attractions are best explored on foot, particularly as the old centre of the city is quite hilly with narrow streets. However, a lot of streets are quite steep, so it might be worth considering public transport on your uphill journey and savour the sights by taking a leisurely walk downhill on your return journey!
Lisbon’s public transport systems (bus, metro and tram services) are generally regarded to be reliable and good value for money. The efficient metro system in Lisbon runs from 6.30am to 1am and is well known for its unique contemporary art decoration.
Lisbon trams are a great way to enjoy your sightseeing, particularly when exploring the steep narrow streets.
The primary transport station in Lisbon for bus, train, metro and ferry is the Cais do Sodré. For a beautiful view of Lisbon city, take a ferry across the river to Cacilhas.
If you are flying to / from Lisbon city, Lisbon Airport is very conveniently situated near the city centre. Using a taxi to get from Lisbon airport to your hotel is a fast option and there is a taxi rank outside the airport terminal. An alternative is the AeroBus 91 which runs a regular and frequent service from 8am to 8.45pm between Lisbon city centre and the airport.
